Awesome Awkward Parenting Kids

Being a Mom is great. I love my kid—I think she’s hilarious, fun, and smart. But, let’s be real…SOMETIMES being a Mom isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. There’s a lot that was left out of the handbook for sure. I am not saying that for every good, there’s a bad. I’m saying for every awesome thing—every awesome milestone your kid hits, every awesome moment—there’s an equally awkward moment. In honor of all those awkward moments in Mommyhood that no one tells you about but everyone laughs at you with you about, here are my top awesome and awkward moments.

  1. Awesome: Getting kisses whenever I want from my (sometimes slobbery, sometimes sticky, always cute) child.

(At 15 months in this pic, she was the trifecta: Sticky, slobbery, AND paint covered.)

Awkward: Getting one of those kisses on my rear end—fresh out of the shower and caught by surprise. It totally happened last week.

2. Awesome: Hearing those sweet first words.

Awkward: Realizing one of those words starts with an “s,” ends with a “t,” and has “hi” in the middle. (Sidenote: Don’t make a big deal out of it, or your kid will NEVER.STOP.SAYING.IT.)

3. Awesome: When your kid loudly oohs and coos over “the cutest baby in the world” at the restaurant.

Awkward: When your kid loudly informs you (and aforementioned restaurant) that the baby YOU pointed out “is like, totally not cute.”

4. Awesome: Your kid responds to a stranger saying, “You’re so cute!!” with a big smile and a, “Thank you very much!”

Awkward: Your kid announces to stranger that she’s going to be a big sister. (Side note: She’s not. I’m just fat.)

5. Awesome: She’s finally old enough that I can take a shower in peace (and maybe even shave my legs!) without fear that she’ll burn the house down while I’m in there.

Awkward: I have to bathe with all these guys.

I mean, does Captain Barnacles REALLY need to see me naked?

5. Awesome: Seeing your baby hit all those awesome milestones (crawling, talking, walking).

Awkward: Seeing your baby walk right over to the dog’s food and water bowl for a drink and a snack.

6. Awesome: Having a child who doesn’t mind that you have a camera shoved in her face all the time.

Awkward: Having every single photo involve some form of this pose:

         pose       pose2 pose3

                                 Every.                                                                                  Single.                                                         One.

7. Awesome: Weekend naptimes mean Mommy gets to cuddle and sleep (!) too!

Awkward: When Mommy is the only one who wants to take a nap.

8. Awesome: The moment when you realize you’re doing a great job as a parent, and your child is actually succeeding in the world.

Awkward: When you second guess yourself at every turn. Don’t do that, Mamas! You’re doing a great job!

Amy
Amy is a Northernor by birth, but please don’t hold it against her! Amy has called Middle Tennessee home for over twenty years and couldn’t picture raising a family anywhere else! Today, Amy lives just outside of Nashville with her husband of over seven years (JP), her four year old spitfire of a daughter (Lily), and their eleven-year-old-but-still-acts-like-a-puppy black lab (Alley). It’s a daily toss up as to who rules their house—Lily or the dog—and Amy has many funny stories to prove the battles. Amy is a working mama by day—a fraud and suspicious activities investigator at a local, community bank, and a jack-of-all-trades by night and weekend. She loves crafts, music, the outdoors, saving money and bargain hunting, gardening (and all the canning, freezing, and preserving that comes with it), comic books, and anything upcycled, recycled, or DIY, and she’s just crunchy enough to call herself a hippie. She can often be found perusing yard sales, flea markets, Pinterest, and Etsy, looking for her next big project, or playing superheroes, painting, or playing outside with Lily. Currently, Amy and her husband are on a quest to find the best burger in Nashville and love visiting all the fantastic foodie spots this great city has to offer!
