Honkey Toddlin Kid Friendly Live Music in Nashville 2 NashvilleMomsBlog

Welcome back, fellow music lovers! I’m hoping by this point you’ve seen so much live music with your child that they have sold their “Frozen” DVD on eBay and are currently playing “Stairway to Heaven” on the toy xylophone to a room full of astounded teddy bears. If you’re still looking for that perfect, inspiring experience, don’t fret—we’ve got a few more places for you and your little ones to check out. Including my very favourite…

Yip Yap Yup and Pizza: The Best Combination

Family Wash kids night is the best thing that has ever happened. It is better than the moon landing, it is better than K-Cups, it is better than heated seats in the car on a blisteringly cold day. Until they invent Spanx that don’t make me feel like I’m being ingested by a 500-pound serpent when I sit down, it will remain mankind’s crowning achievement.

Every Wednesday evening between 6-7:30(ish), one of Nashville’s most amazing little venues is dedicated to Nashville’s most amazing little people. Family Wash features live local children’s music played by actual awesome adult human people (not anyone masquerading as a screechy puppet)—just real musicians doing what musicians do. The bands, “Yip Yap Yup” (Wilder’s absolute, all-time, super favourite) and “Bill Crosby and the Bahama Lama Orchestra” are both outstanding and trade off the kid serenading duties week by week.

Kids eat free (pizza or macaroni with a juice box) with the purchase of an adult entrée, AND if you’re feeling sudsy, the beer selection is excellent.

Tip your servers well! Their ability to balance multiple chicken potpies while weaving through the sheer mayhem that is a pre-bedtime toddler dance party is nothing short of masterful.

The Post

Confession: I never really got into that whole “juicing” thing. I know drinking 4 cups of kale and a lemon performs some kind of detoxifying magic, but still, I’m kind of like “Vitamix, Shmitamix! Give me a fork!”

What I can get into is waffles. And awesome, family-friendly bluegrass music.

Every Sunday, The Post in East Nashville serves up one of the best musical brunching experiences in town. They’ve got plenty on the menu for you sensible “drink-your-breakkie” sorts and a delicious array splendid carb-y things for your kids (and me).

The fun starts at 10am and goes until 1pm.

Nashville Children’s Theatre

Children can be…theatrical. Sometimes, it’s the adorable kind of theatrical; and other times, it’s the kind where they lock themselves in the bathroom stark naked and angry-pee on your “Us Weekly.” Because your life isn’t dramatic enough, I’m going to suggest you take your child to a musical.

If there is any way to keep a child in a seat for longer than 10 minutes, it’s a musical. The songs, the dancing, the costumes…there’s a lot to keep that busy little brain occupied! The Nashville Children’s Theatre has some amazing musical productions on the calendar for kiddos of all ages. Currently on the stage is Mo Willems’ Elephant and Piggie’s We are In a Play!,” a musical described as “part vaudeville, part absurd, and entirely hilarious.” If you think your child might fancy a foray into Appalachia, check out Jack’s Tale: A Mythic Mountain Musical beginning February 19th.

Sugar Dive

I’m going to do my very best not to make any puns using the word “sweet” when describing the pure gloriousness that is Sugar Dive, but it isn’t going to be easy for me.

Sugar Dive is an absolutely beautiful vintage candy and soda shop located in the heart of Green Hills. Though I have a vicious, unappeasable sweet tooth that will probably have me in dentures before I hit 40, it isn’t the only reason I like to visit this visually stunning, expertly curated collection of sweets. They also have music (Yay!)! All ages, family-friendly music! The Sugar Dive stage has hosted a whole bunch of local talent including children’s favorite, the super amazing Mr. Steve the Music Man (note: anywhere Mr. Steve is playing is a great place to hear music—be sure to sign up for his newsletter.)

Rumor has it there’ll be a lot more musical fun to be had here in 2015, so be sure to check their Facebook page for updates.

Time to turn off the (utterly terrifying) “Kidz Bop” and show those children of yours why they call it Music City! Happy listening, folks!
