Myths And Truths About Pregnancy Hair from a Master Stylist

0

Are you expecting a little one? Do you feel like your hair has changed? Well, it’s not your imagination. Your hair does change when you get pregnant. Not the hair grown previous to conceiving — but the hair growth after. Sometimes it’s not even perceptible, and sometimes it’s the difference between whether that perm takes or not. All that to say, be patient with it. If your color doesn’t take the way it normally would, chalk it up to hormones helping you with more important tasks — and ask your stylist for a do-over!

Getting Your Hair Colored While Pregnant

Off-The-Scalp color services like foiling or balayage will not harm anyone. The pigments don’t absorb up the hair shaft and penetrate the scalp. It’s fair to note that hair is basically dead as soon as it grows out of the follicle. However, breathing in toxic fumes isn’t good for anyone. So you may want to consider pursuing non-toxic environments while pregnant.

Hair Shedding Post Birth

Nearly all women shed lots of hair after child birth. Simply put, it’s because during pregnancy our bodies hold onto what we’d naturally lose during our hair’s normal shedding cycle. You can find an easy breakdown of our hair phases here. In order to promote hair growth as you recover from giving birth, consider the following:

  • Taking a vitamin that contains Biotin, Folic Acid, Omega 3, and Vitamins A, B, and E. All of these nutrients are great for healthy hair growth. (If these sound familiar, it’s because many of them are found in your prenatal vitamins!)
  • When shampooing, make sure to massage the shampoo into the scalp. This encourages circulation and helps stimulate hair growth.
  • Be extra gentle on your hair by putting your cotton pillowcases away and opting for silk or satin ones. These fibers are easier on your hair cuticles — especially if your hair has undergone any chemical services.
  • If you apply root lifts, dry shampoo, or any other products to your roots, make sure you deep cleanse with a clarifying shampoo every once in a while. Ask your stylist how often. The frequency will depend on the porosity and strength of your hair, as well as your styling product-routine.

When I moved to Nashville when I was 11, I never knew how deep my roots would run here! I attended Belmont University (Go Bruins!) where I met my husband David. We were married in 2008, and 4 months later, he was off to Iraq for a year. A couple of years after he returned home, we had our first daughter, Madeline, who is a lively redhead that keeps us on our toes! Any and all rumors you've ever heard about the nature of redheads are in fact true. Our second little girl, Violet, was born in July of this year and is the sweetest little addition. Before having children, I worked as a pediatric nurse for 7 years, and last year worked at two Williamson County high schools as a Health Science teacher. I will once again be staying home with the birth of our second daughter. I am new to the world of blogging, but look forward to the experience of getting to share stories, tips and advice with other local moms!
