Thanksgiving Traditions for Kids — Get Your Little Turkeys Involved!

0

Is it really almost Thanksgiving? Just the thought of Thanksgiving Day makes my tummy start to rumble. I can almost smell the warm bread baking in the oven. You can thank me later for making you hungry for turkey and dressing. (Or do you call it stuffing?)

I recently realized that Thanksgiving is one of the only holidays that doesn’t have many built-in kid-friendly activities. If you really think about it, the only activity for kids to partake in during Thanksgiving is the eating. If your kids are like mine, they typically turn their noses up at the traditional turkey day fixings. Who can blame them? Dressing is one of the most visually unappealing foods ever.

I have put together a few new Thanksgiving tradition ideas to help get your little ones involved in Thanksgiving Day:

Watch the Parade

Is it just me or is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade a dying tradition? Let’s try to bring it back by creating a Thanksgiving Parade scavenger hunt. This is a great way to get the kids out of the kitchen and have a little family competition.

Some items to look out for:

  • A bike
  • Ronald McDonald
  • A musical instrument
  • Spiderman
  • A red balloon
  • A marching band
  • Big Bird
  • A turkey
  • Snoopy
  • Santa
  • A police officer
  • Cheerleader
  • Stars

Thankful A B C’s

Using all the letters in the alphabet, let your kids tell you the 26 things they are thankful for! Even better? Make this a part of your family’s very own Thankfulness Tree!

Dress up Like Pilgrims and/or Indians

This is a great teaching moment to tell them about the Pilgrims and Indians and the First Thanksgiving. We made our outfits last year using felt and paint.

Make Placemats

I love this idea. It might be one of my favorites. Have your little turkeys create and decorate placemats for all the guests attending. Need some help? Check out this great printable.

Get Them Involved in the Kitchen

It’s great to get the kids involved in the kitchen. You will be surprised at how proud they get when they see your guests chowing down on their awesome creations. Plus it’s a great teaching opportunity for measurements, addition, and manual dexterity skills. Personally, I love using this Harvest Hash Chex Mix. It is easy for them to assemble and the perfect treat to send home with your guests.

I hope these ideas help you and your little turkeys have an amazing Thanksgiving feast!
