I love decorating my home with the seasons, but sometimes constantly buying new décor can be quite expensive—and just not possible. Décor trends change, and my own tastes change (my husband will attest to that). So, usually, I like to switch up my seasonal décor from year to year as well. One simple and cheap way to update old décor—in this case, faux pumpkins—is with paint!
What you’ll need:
- old faux pumpkins (Or new ones for which you wish to change the color)
- paint (I used chalk paint.)
- paint brushes
I started out by gathering all of the pumpkins I wanted to paint. These guys are all four years old, and have already been painted once. I was, apparently, in a metallic phase. ::Cringe::
I wanted to go a little more neutral this year, so I grabbed some white and light blue chalk paint I already had on hand. You could use regular latex paint too, but be aware it may not adhere to some surfaces very well.
I started out by dividing up my pumpkins so I knew which ones I wanted to be white and which ones blue. Then, I put a base coat on each with a small craft brush. They looked kind of streaky, but don’t panic! You don’t want the first coat very thick.
After they were dry, I put another light coat on with a larger brush this time—which really evened everything out. Also, make sure your brush strokes are going up and down (from the stem to the bottom of the pumpkin) and not side to side. That way, any brush strokes that are visible will look like part of the pumpkin’s natural texture. You could also touch up the stems with brown paint, but mine were already pretty dark, so I didn’t worry about it.
And voila! A new and updated look without having to buy any new décor or spend any money! (Or at least minimal money if you don’t already have paint on hand!)
